Sub-Inspector (SI) of the police Yusuf Ali signaled two young men on a motorcycle to stop at the checkpoint. After a while, 10-15 people came and started beating the officer, accusing him of being a ‘fake policeman’. They snatched his mobile phone, wallet and walkie-talkie.

The attack took place on the Outer Ring Road in Patenga police station area of ​​Chittagong on the night of February 28. A video of the incident went viral on social media. It shows that SI Yusuf Ali’s clothes were torn off during the attack. He is crying helplessly. On Monday, he said, ‘When the policemen’s clothes were torn off, I could not hold back my emotions, I started crying.’

Not only the Patenga incident, there have been 225 such attacks on the police in the last six months. There have also been attacks and kidnappings of accused in some places. Most of the incidents were committed by organized attacks by unruly people or by forming a ‘mob’.

According to the police headquarters, out of 225 incidents of attacks on police officers while on duty in the last six months, 70 were major incidents. Last year, 24 attacks occurred in September, 34 in October, 49 in November, 43 in December, 38 in January and 37 in February. Apart from these police statistics, there have been various incidents of adverse behavior with police officers on the road.

At a function in Rangpur on Thursday, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam said, “Due to the deposed autocratic fascist government, the police are being attacked by people while enforcing the law. My request to civil society is to bring the police closer again. Help the police do their job.”
