A fire broke out in an abandoned cold storage building for storing potatoes in Tongibari, Munshiganj. The fire broke out in the abandoned Chan Cold Storage in Abdullahpur area of the upazila at around 10 pm on Saturday (March 8).
The fire service said that locals saw a fire in the abandoned Chan Cold Storage building in Abdullahpur area of the upazila at around 10 pm on Saturday. Later, when the fire brigade was informed, two units of the Tongibari Fire Service and Civil Defense rushed to the spot. They started extinguishing the fire. Later, another unit joined in.
The fire service also said that fire service personnel had to rush to enter the building due to heavy smoke. Due to this, the fire service personnel cut the walls of some parts of the building using machines to remove the smoke. Later, the service personnel entered inside with various modern equipment and completely brought the fire under control at around 2 am after about four hours of effort.
Quoting witnesses, Shafiqul Islam further said that on Saturday, a grinding machine was used to cut rods inside the building to remove parts of the cold storage. It is believed that the fire started from the spark of the grinding machine. However, the matter can be confirmed through investigation.
