Although the construction of the bridge over the dead Teesta canal in Balatari village of Rajarhat upazila of Kurigram was completed in 2022, the villagers are not able to use the bridge. Because the bridge was built without a connecting road.
According to sources from the Rajarhat Upazila Project Implementation Office, the construction of a 30-meter bridge over the dead Teesta canal in Balatari village under the Ministry of Disaster Management began in the 2019-20 fiscal year at a cost of 78 lakh taka. The agreement was signed with Mokchedul Haque, the owner of M/s. Shital Construction of Kurigram. The main contractor appointed local Chhatra League leader Rakibuzzaman Rakib as a subcontractor for the work. Since the work was not completed on time, the period was extended until September 2023. Nevertheless, since the work was completed, the period was extended until September 2024. Although the main bridge was completed during this time, the connecting road was not built.
Thousands of people from 8 villages of Chakirpashar and Nazimkhan unions in Rajarhat upazila will use the bridge built over the dead Teesta canal. They are unable to use the bridge as the connecting road has not been built. Due to this, they have to travel 3 kilometers to use an alternative road.
