The Interim Government’s Chief Advisor, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres are visiting the Ukhiya Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar on Friday (March 14). After visiting the camp and holding several meetings, the two will have Iftar with hundreds of Rohingya in the evening.
The news of the Chief Advisor and UN Secretary-General attending the Iftar ceremony has created excitement among the Rohingya in the camp. The UN Secretary-General has visited the camp several times before. However, this is the first visit of Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus to the Rohingya camp.
The UN Secretary-General is coming to Bangladesh on a four-day visit on March 13. On the second day of the visit, on March 14, he will leave Dhaka for Cox’s Bazar at 10 am. The UN Secretary-General will be welcomed at the Cox’s Bazar airport by Farooq-e-Azam Bir Pratik, Advisor to the Interim Government. Then the UN Secretary-General will be taken from Cox’s Bazar to the Ukhiya refugee camp. On the other hand, the Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus will reach the Ukhiya refugee camp by helicopter from Dhaka at around 4 pm on the same day.
That evening, the Chief Advisor and the UN Secretary-General will have iftar with representatives of the Rohingya community. After that, they will leave the refugee camp for Dhaka. Law enforcement agencies have said that several layers of security have been created. Millions of Rohingya who have fled to Bangladesh are hoping to return to their homeland, Myanmar. The Rohingya refugees will also demand sustainable repatriation and the establishment of safe zones.
