Iran confirms receipt of Trump’s letter, UAE adviser mediates. Austria’s new government has ordered an immediate suspension of family reunification for asylum seekers. The move comes as the country faces growing support for the far-right on the issue of migration. The three-party coalition government announced the move under the European Union’s emergency provisions on security.
The center-right People’s Party OVP, led by Chancellor Christian Stoker, says Austria and its system have limited capacity. The influx of so many migrants has already overwhelmed the system. Critics have called the suspension a violation of human rights.
Last month, a suspected Syrian asylum seeker stabbed a 14-year-old boy to death. This has further heightened concerns about migration in Austria. The government says around 18,000 people arrived in Austria through family reunification in 2023 and 2024.
