The interim government has decided to change the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, also known as BSMMU, located in Shahbagh in the capital. At the same time, the names of two medical universities named after Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib are also being changed. The decision was taken at a meeting of the advisory council of the interim government on Thursday.
After the meeting this afternoon, a press release from the Cabinet Division said that the draft of the ‘Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’ has been given in principle and final approval. The initiator of this ordinance is the Health Education and Family Welfare Department. Through this ordinance, the changed name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University will be ‘Bangladesh Medical University’.
The draft of the proposed ‘Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’, initiated by the Health Education and Family Welfare Department, has also been given in-principle and final approval. As a result, the name of Sheikh Hasina Medical University, Khulna will be changed to ‘Khulna Medical University’. The draft of the same department’s ‘Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University, Sylhet (Amendment) Ordinance, 2025’ has been given in-principle and final approval. Through this ordinance, the name of Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Medical University will be changed to ‘Sylhet Medical University’.
