The journey time of every train running over the Jamuna Railway Bridge has been reduced. The previous road bridge is no longer used. As a result, it takes three to five minutes to cross the Jamuna River by train. Earlier, it took 20 to 25 minutes. However, northern railway passengers will have to pay an additional fare to cross the river faster. The fare for trains running using the new bridge is increasing from 45 to 160 taka per seat. The additional fare will be effective from March 19.
Hasina Khatun, Pakshi Divisional Transport Officer of the Western Railway, said that due to the movement of trains over the Jamuna Railway Bridge, the schedule of almost all trains has been changed. Due to the movement of trains over this bridge, the time is less. Both lines of this bridge will be opened on March 18. Then, no train will be delayed according to the current schedule. Due to the slow movement of trains over the Jamuna Bridge, multiple trains had to wait on both sides of the bridge. Now no train will have to wait anymore.
The custom of collecting additional fare as maintenance cost of new bridges has been in place since the British era. Until now, there was no specific rule on how much additional toll would be collected. When the railway was opened over the Padma Bridge, a rule was introduced to calculate the additional toll for each kilometer of the newly opened large bridge, assuming a rate of 25 kilometers.
