The UGC has finalized the name of the new university for seven government colleges in the capital. It is going to be named ‘Dhaka Central University’. The decision was taken at a meeting held with a 32-member student delegation at the UGC building in Agargaon in the capital on Sunday. Keeping in mind various issues including improving the quality of conventional education and formulating timely education methods, seven government colleges in the capital were affiliated to Dhaka University in February 2017.

The seven colleges are – Dhaka College, Eden Mohila College, Begum Badrunnesa Government Mohila College, Shaheed Suhrawardy College, Kabi Nazrul Government College, Mirpur Bangla College and Government Titumir College. Later, following allegations of various irregularities and shortsightedness by the Dhaka University authorities in the management of the colleges, the students of the colleges launched a long agitation since October last year. In view of this, the affiliation of Dhaka University was cancelled and a special committee was formed by the government in December. The members of that committee have been working on various projects for more than three months, including feasibility studies, campus visits, formulating an outline for respectful separation, and meetings with teachers and students.
