returns to broadcast

Afghanistan’s women’s radio station Radio Begum is finally set to resume broadcasting. Earlier, the Taliban authorities had shut it down, citing unauthorized content from foreign TV channels and improper use of its license.

Voice of America reported that all the content of the station is produced solely by Afghan women. Its satellite channel Begum TV is operated from France and broadcasts programs covering the curriculum of Afghan schools for grades seven to 12. The Taliban have banned women and girls from receiving education beyond the sixth grade in the country. The Taliban’s Ministry of Information and Culture issued a statement on Saturday night saying that Radio Begum had repeatedly requested to resume operations and that the ban had been lifted after the station promised to the authorities.
