Toby Cadman, Special Adviser to the Chief Prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal expressed hope that India will return Sheikh Hasina to the country in the interest of fair trial by responding positively to the extradition letter given by Bangladesh.

He said this to reporters at a press briefing after the hearing at the International Criminal Tribunal premises on Monday (January 27).

In response to a question about India’s silence in response to the letter to Sheikh Hasina, Tobi told the media, “The Ministry of External Affairs has rightly called for the extradition of India.” But it is up to India whether they stand for justice, or stand for acquitting her (Hasina). I hope they will stand for justice in future.’

He further said, ‘Bangladesh government cannot force India to take positive steps in response to the letter, but we can hope that he will be brought to this country and brought to justice. It is good to say here, in the interest of justice, he will get all the opportunities to defend himself according to the existing law.

In response to another question from journalists, he said, “I have come here to work as a professional and will do so.” It will not be affected by any past events, anyone’s activities or what my previous work scope was. It is good for all to know that as these cases are complex and the procedure is time consuming, there is no rush to complete these procedures properly.’

Toby, an expert in international criminal law, said, “But after seeing the way the Chief Prosecutor has organized everything and made sure that the law fully cooperates with us, I am confident that things will be done properly.” As long as I work in the tribunal, discussions will continue in the existing framework of the law. I will discuss this with other people in the legal field to bring about necessary changes in the existing legal framework. Hopefully, if that is done, the legal issues will be more neutral, simpler and worthy of being recognized by international standards.
