As part of his visit to the Rohingya camp in Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres inspected various handicrafts and daily use products made by the Rohingya. On Friday (March 14) afternoon, he visited the multipurpose center, where he saw clothes, bags, bamboo and jute products, wooden crafts and other handicrafts made by Rohingya men and women.
The UN Secretary-General praised these products and encouraged the Rohingyas’ efforts to become self-reliant, said Rohingya leader Nurul Amin. He said, “The Secretary-General said that these initiatives are helping to boost the confidence of the Rohingyas. The international community can play a greater role in their development.”
A Rohingya woman craftswoman named Jamila said, “It is very good to see the UN Secretary-General’s interest in the bags and clothes we have made. He praised our work, which will inspire us further.” The Rohingya said, “He (Guterres) came to visit the camp as our guardian, saw our work, and also saw our way of life. “We have conveyed our demands to him. He has assured us that he will look into the issues.”
