In the October-December quarter, i.e. in the last three months, the number of millionaire accounts or account holders in banks increased by 4,954. This picture has emerged in the latest updated report of Bangladesh Bank.

The concerned said that after the July uprising, many people started withdrawing deposits from banks due to political unrest. As a result, the number of millionaires decreased. However, as the political unrest in the country started decreasing, the money in people’s hands started returning to the banks. As a result, the number of account holders per crore is increasing.

According to the central bank, at the end of December 2024, the total number of accounts in the banking sector was 163.2 million 47.532. The total deposit balance in these accounts stood at 18.83 million 711 crore taka. At the end of last September, the total number of accounts in the banking sector was 162 million 28.255. The deposits in these accounts were 18.25 million taka. Accordingly, the number of accounts in the banking sector increased by 12 lakh 19 thousand 277 in three months and the amount of deposits increased by 45 thousand 628 crore taka.

Sector related people say that a crore taka account does not mean a millionaire account. Because there are many institutions besides individuals in the list of those keeping more than one crore taka in the bank. Again, there is no specific limit on how many bank accounts an individual and institution can open. As a result, there are multiple accounts of an institution or an individual. Among them are accounts of crore taka of various government institutions and organizations.

The report shows that at the end of December, the number of bank accounts with deposits of more than one crore taka stood at 1 lakh 22 thousand 81. Three months ago (at the end of September), it was 1 lakh 17 thousand 127. Accordingly, the number of millionaire accounts increased by 4 thousand 954 in the span of three months.
