Colorful fasting with henna

The holy month of Ramadan is celebrated in various customs and cultures around the world. Not all of these customs and cultures are based on the Quran and Hadith, but locals have been observing it with great importance for centuries. One such tradition centered on Ramadan is giving henna to girls during their first fast. The custom in the northern border region of Saudi Arabia is that henna is given to girls when they fast for the first time.

To give henna to a girl, family members gather and paint her hands with colorful designs. They encourage the young girl to fast and want to make her first fast memorable. The henna designs painted in a festive atmosphere increase the pride and enthusiasm of the young girl. They show their painted hands to others. Through this, the spirit of Ramadan is strengthened in the society.

Wajdan Al Anji is a resident of the Arar region of Saudi Arabia. Regarding giving henna to girls during their first fast, he said, “We have been carrying this tradition for many years for our girls. It connects our children with our elders.” They share the spirit of Ramadan with each other.
