Although there is a demand for all types of fruits throughout the year, the demand for juicy local and foreign fruits increases during Ramadan. Recently, the supplementary duty on the import of foreign fruits has increased from 20 to 30 percent. Therefore, the prices of foreign fruits like apples, pears, grapes, oranges, malta, strawberries and pomegranates have increased from 20 to 80 taka per kg. In this reality, those who used to buy fruits for their families are forced to exclude nutritious products like fruits from their diet.
However, in some cases, the prices of some local fruits have also increased due to the high price of foreign fruits. Although pineapples are sold for 100 taka per pair depending on the size, before Ramadan it was 80 taka per pair. Guava is being sold in the market for 80 to 130 taka per kg, watermelon for 60 to 80 taka and papaya for 120 to 150 taka per kg. Safeda is being sold at 120 to 160 per kg, melons at 100 to 300 per piece depending on size, bell peppers at 80 to 120 per piece, bananas at 80 to 130 per dozen.
However, due to increased demand during Ramadan, the prices of all types of fruits have increased. A visit to the market has shown that the prices of both foreign and imported fruits have increased slightly compared to before. Retailers said that the prices of almost all types of fruits have increased by 20 to 50 taka per kg in the last one week. However, buyers claim that the prices of almost all types of fruits increase every year when Ramadan comes. Therefore, they demand proper intervention from the government.
