Bede Palli of Bhairab in Kishoreganj

There is no Eid atmosphere in the Bede Palli of Bhairab in Kishoreganj. Many people are facing a food crisis. They cannot even afford to break their fast with something good. Even though Eid-ul-Fitr is approaching, the Bede community here does not have the joy of Eid. On the other hand, there is a problem of water and toilets. Toilets have been made in the open with polythene and bamboo poles, which are not enough for more than 150 people.

Since it is the month of Ramadan, we have no work to do now. Some people can break their fast for 2 to 4 hundred taka, while many cannot. We are surviving without eating. We cannot even afford to break our fast with something good or bad. So today we are all raising money and organizing a good or bad Iftar. Maybe today we will all be able to have a good Iftar as much as we can. That is our joy. And Eid is unthinkable. Some women in the village said that they cannot even afford to buy a single dress for their children, let alone a single penny for themselves.

More than 150 people from the Bede community live near the highway police station near the Bhairab-Kishoreganj regional road. All 40 families in this village are Muslims. Although a few families started living there about 8 years ago, 40 families have now settled there. A few years ago, 2 tubewells were arranged for them, but now they are no longer functioning. As the population in the village increases, the people here are struggling to do household chores, starting from bathing, dressing, wiping smoke. They have to stand for a long time while bathing. On the other hand, there is a food crisis. Many people are spending their time idle due to less work during the month of Ramadan. And Eid is just a few days away. They cannot afford to buy a new dress for their children for Eid.

Upazila Nirbahi Officer Shabnam Sharmin said, “Since the Bede community is a floating community, no government assistance is being provided to them. We will try to bring smiles to their faces on Eid with the help of the wealthy in the society.”
