Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, is holding elections on Tuesday. While Greenland’s general elections have not attracted much attention in the past, this time the vote has caught the attention of the world due to a different atmosphere. The world’s largest island has come to the center of global discussion after US President Donald Trump repeatedly expressed his interest in taking control of Greenland.
Greenland has been under Danish control for almost 300 years. The island is located about 3,000 kilometers from the Danish mainland. The island’s autonomous authorities are responsible for managing and looking after its own internal affairs. And decisions related to the island’s foreign and defense policy are made in Copenhagen. Elections are held every four years in the 31-seat parliament of the autonomous island.
The number of voters on this island is about 44,000 out of a total population of 56,000. To achieve a majority in parliament alone, 16 seats are needed. Candidates from six parties are competing in today’s elections. The election results are expected to be available by Wednesday morning. Greenland currently has a two-party coalition government in power. The two parties are the Community of the People (IA) and Forward (S). Greenland’s Prime Minister is Mout Egede.
Of the six parties running in the election, five are in favor of Greenland’s independence from Denmark. The island has caught the eye of US President Trump due to its strategic location and untapped mineral resources.
