US President Donald Trump has reiterated his determination to make Greenland, the world’s largest island, a part of the US territory. He said that the US should own Greenland in the interests of international security.
On Thursday, Trump met with Mark Rutte, Secretary General of the US-led military alliance North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in the Oval Office of the US President’s Office in Washington. There, Trump raised the issue of Greenland.
Trump told the NATO Secretary General, “You know, Mark, we need to have Greenland for international security. It’s not just security – international security. We have a lot of our favorite players roaming around the coast of this island.” Here, Trump meant Russia and China by “favorite players.”
During Thursday’s meeting, Trump told the NATO Secretary General, “I think it will come to us. And I’m just thinking; I haven’t thought about it too much before, but I’m sitting with someone who can play a significant role. We’ll talk to you about it in the near future.”
