EC's public notice suspended by High Court

The High Court has stayed the public notice issued by the Election Commission (EC) for the registration of new political parties. The High Court has also issued a rule asking why this public notice should not be declared illegal and cancelled. On Tuesday (March 18), a double bench of Justice Md. Akram Hossain Chowdhury and Justice KM Rasheduzzaman Raja issued this order. Along with this, the respondents have been asked to respond to this rule within four weeks.

Advocate Abeda Gulrukh heard the writ petition in the court.

On Monday (March 17), Chief Coordinator of the State Reform Movement and Supreme Court lawyer Hasnat Qayyum filed a writ petition in the relevant branch of the High Court. The writ petition names the Chief Election Commissioner, the Election Commission Secretary, and the Electoral Reform Commission as respondents.

It is to be noted that the Election Commission issued a public notice for the registration of political parties on March 10. The notice urges political parties to apply for registration by April 20.
