Human Rights Watch (HRW), one of the world’s most renowned human rights organization, said the political leadership was directly directed to the police in July 2021. The information came out in a HRW report published on January 26.

The report said, “Many police officers say they believe that they have received additional force from political leadership during the movement.”

According to the report, during the agitation, police officers received direct and hidden instructions for the alleviation of the deadly force.

The same officer said that senior officials of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Headquarters were directing CCTV footage and instructing the field level policemen to shoot like video games.

He also mentioned that Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan and Inspector General of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun gave the directive to Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner Habibur Rahman, who later directed the Deputy Commissioners. The report mentions that the order of this directive is in line with the police structure of Bangladesh.

The Role of Violence and Police After Movement:

The report also said that after August 7, police gave rise to several violent incidents. For example, on August 8, police set up a car carrying the casualties in Ashulia. According to an eyewitness, at least one person is burned alive while wearing a handcuff.
