Kalbaisakhi at noon

There is a possibility of a Kalbaisakhi storm in various parts of the country by noon today, Saturday (March 22). In Bangladesh, Kalbaisakhi storms usually occur in the months of Baishakh-Jayishtha. Accordingly, Kalbaisakhi storms are expected to occur in mid-April. But due to environmental changes, Kalbaisakhi storms also arrive before this time, i.e. towards the end of March.

Characteristics

A Kalbaisakhi storm is different from a normal storm. For example, the wind speed in a Kalbaisakhi storm is much higher than a normal storm. Its severity is great even for a very short time. During the storm, the sky is covered with thick black clouds. There is heavy hailstorm with thunder. Evening or night darkness is felt in the morning or even in the afternoon.

The wind speed in a Kalbaisakhi storm is 40 to 60 km per hour. In some cases, this speed can be more than 100 km per hour. Usually, this storm does not last more than an hour.

How to get a glimpse

The dark clouds accumulating in the northeast corner give a glimpse of this storm. Since the environment for this storm is created in just a few hours, this storm cannot be predicted or estimated a few days in advance.
In this context, meteorologist Bazlur Rashid said, Kalbaisakhi storms form 5/6 hours in advance and can be fully understood 2/3 hours in advance.

Why does it happen?

According to the location of Bangladesh, the warm air generated from the Bay of Bengal flows northward. And the cold air coming from the Himalayas flows southward. Dense black clouds with thunder are formed at the meeting point of these hot and cold air. When the cold air starts to descend from there, there is a head-on collision between the high-pressure northern air and the low-pressure southern air. And because of this, the storm that is formed is known as Kalbaisakhi storm in Bangladesh. To stay safe from Kalbaisakhi storms and lightning, stay inside your home, office or shop. Keep candles, matches or torchlights close at hand. Close windows and doors tightly. Only go outside if necessary after the storm has passed. Ensure a safe distance from tall trees and electricity poles.
