Ali Riaz, the head of the Constitutional Reform Commission, said that the existing structure needs to be reformed keeping in mind all the issues including inclusiveness, politics, and good governance. The reform process will continue by discussing the reforms with the political parties. National consensus will be created through discussions with everyone. He said that if there is no reform, it will not be possible to deal with dictatorship. This will lead to the return of misrule again.
He said these things at a roundtable meeting titled ‘Political Consensus and Citizen Thought in State Reform’ at the CIRDAP auditorium in the capital on Thursday. The event organized by Citizens for Good Governance was presided over by Sujan President Badiul Alam Majumdar. Ali Riaz said, we have seen that a farce was made in the name of elections. Again, the judiciary was destroyed and the Prime Minister was given exclusive power, which is not democratic. Reform is needed to come out of the lack of justice. In the past 16 years, weak institutions have been destroyed by establishing dictatorship. Due to the lack of proper democracy, weak and fragile institutions have not been allowed to stand.
He said, now the question may arise why reforms are needed, who proposed these reforms. It basically came from the people, from their anger and protests. Now, dictatorship cannot be confronted without reforming the existing structural system. It will return again and again. Therefore, proposals for reforms or reforms are needed.
