Canada's new Prime Minister

Mark Carney has been elected as the new Prime Minister of Canada. He replaces outgoing Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The country’s ruling Liberal Party elected Carney as the new party leader on Sunday local time. Later, Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra announced his name as the prime minister. Although according to the rules, the party leader becomes the new prime minister.

Mark Carney became the party leader after competing with four candidates. Trudeau will hand over power to Carney in the next few days. He was the governor of the Bank of Canada. Carney also led the Bank of England. The new leader of the Liberal Party was chosen by members on Sunday. The 59-year-old Carney was elected with 86 percent of the vote. Mark Carney received 131,674 votes. His closest rival, Christina Freeland, received 11,134 votes.

Trudeau announced his resignation as prime minister last January after nine consecutive years in power. The date for selecting his successor was then set for March 9. This week, Mark Carney will be sworn in as prime minister by the Governor General of Canada. The Governor General of Canada is the representative of King Charles III of the United Kingdom. He will serve as prime minister until the election. The new prime minister, Carney, is expected to call a new general election in Canada in late April.
