The UK has frozen $32 billion worth of Russian assets since the war in Ukraine began three years ago, the British government said in a report on Friday (March 21). The news was published by the AFP news agency on Saturday (March 22).
The UK has imposed sanctions on 2,011 individuals since the start of the Russian-Ukrainian offensive in February 2022 until March 2024, the AFP report said, citing the UK Treasury.
UK Finance Minister Emma Reynolds said the UK has frozen $32 billion worth of Russian assets and, working with our allies, has deprived Russia of more than $400 billion in assets, equivalent to four years of Russia’s military spending.
Last February, the UK imposed more than 100 sanctions on those supporting Russian President Vladimir Putin in the war in Ukraine, marking the third anniversary of the conflict. The sanctions have blocked access to cash and property by Putin and people linked to his government. Britain and other European countries have yet to agree on how to take control of the assets.
French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer are leading efforts to rally support for Ukraine over a ceasefire.
