The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives has taken the initiative to appoint a contractor for the procurement of Component 1- Intake, Raw Water Pumping Station (RWPS) and Raw Water Pipeline (RWP) of the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant (Phase-3) project under the ‘Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant Construction Project Phase-3’ in Dhaka WASA. The total cost of the project will be Tk 5033 crore 58 lakh 64 thousand 421.
Sources said that Dhaka WASA is providing water supply services to about two crore people living in Dhaka city. About 70 percent of the total water supply in Dhaka city is being supplied from underground sources and about 30 percent from surface sources. Due to the long-term use of groundwater, the water level is going down by about 2-3 meters every year; which is in conflict with sustainable development.
A plan has been taken to increase the amount of water supply from surface sources to 70 percent by 2030. For this purpose, Dhaka WASA has already implemented the Sayedabad Water Treatment Plant Phase-1 and Phase-2, Padma Water Treatment Plant Project and the Gandharvapur Water Treatment Plant Project is under implementation.
