Real Madrid have struggled with injuries this season. The biggest blow has been to their defensive players, with the five players still out injured (Dani Carvajal, Dani Ceballos, Ferland Mendy, Eder Militao and Jesus Vallejo) all defenders.
Real Madrid have had to rely on the ‘B’ team to cope with the pressure. As a result, in November last year, 22-year-old defender Raul Asensio made his debut for the Real Madrid senior team. He has already earned a reputation for tackling, saving Real Madrid from certain goals on many occasions. He has also been noted for his perfect passes over the heads of players, with two of his passes scoring goals for Jude Bellingham against Osasuna and Kylian Mbappe against Manchester City.
Asensio is now the first choice in Real Madrid’s starting XI, who knows if he can replace Militao when he returns! Spain’s football team coach La Fuente wouldn’t have his eye on someone like that, would he? He has included Asensio in the squad for both of Spain’s Nations League quarter-final matches against the Netherlands. The first leg will be held on March 20 and the return on March 23.
