Last July, during the student uprising, six-year-old Riya Gop was shot in the head while playing on the roof. She lost her battle with death in the hospital for five days. In her memory, the Sultana Kamal Women’s Sports Complex in Dhanmondi has been renamed. From now on, the Sultana Kamal Women’s Sports Complex will be called Riya Gop Women’s Sports Complex.

In a letter signed by the Secretary of the National Sports Council, Md. Aminul Islam, he informed the concerned about the new name of this facility today. On July 19 last year, Riya Gop went to play on the roof after finishing her lunch. Shortly after, a commotion started in front of the house. Seeing this, Riya’s father rushed to bring his daughter home from the roof.

What an irony of fate, a bullet hit her in the head as he was holding his daughter. Riya instantly collapsed and died. The father rushed the blood-soaked daughter to the hospital. But Riya could not be saved. The girl left for the country of no return, making everyone cry.

After assuming power, the interim government has changed the names of many sports facilities. A few days ago, the Bangabandhu National Stadium was renamed as the National Stadium, Dhaka. Today, four more sports facilities were renamed. Along with the Sultana Kamal Women’s Sports Complex in Dhanmondi, the Sheikh Russell Roller Skating Complex has been renamed as the National Roller Skating Complex.
