A fire broke out in the Kalamteji area of the Sundarbans. The fire service has started extinguishing the fire since Saturday (March 22) night. It is reported that the fire service will start extinguishing the fire with water by pulling a pipe line from Sunday (March 23) morning.
Although the fire service personnel reached the spot, they could not start extinguishing the fire until 6 pm on Saturday (March 22). The fire service personnel could not work because the water source was far away. Forest guards have started cutting fire lines around the fire to prevent the fire from spreading throughout the forest.
Kazi Nurul Karim, Divisional Forest Officer of the Sundarbans East Forest Division (Bagerhat), said that a fire has broken out in the bushes and shrubs of 3 to 4 acres of the forest. The forest department is trying to douse the fire by cutting the fire lines and sprinkling water in a small area to prevent the fire from spreading. Several fire service teams will resume extinguishing the fire from Sunday morning.
He said that the cause of the fire could not be determined for now. An investigation committee will be formed to find out the cause only after the fire is completely extinguished. Earlier on Saturday (March 22), residents of the area adjacent to the forest saw smoke rising from the Taperbil area of the forest around 12 noon. The Forest Department confirmed the fire around 3 pm.
