Armed groups have seized a train carrying an estimated 450 passengers in Pakistan’s Balochistan province. Insurgents launched an armed attack on a train carrying hundreds of passengers in southwestern Balochistan on Tuesday (March 11). The armed groups reportedly took control of the train in a remote, mountainous area of Balochistan province bordering Afghanistan and Iran, injuring the driver.
“The gunmen have taken over 450 passengers on the train, including women and children,” Muhammad Kashif, a senior railway official in Quetta, the capital of Balochistan province, told AFP. The Baloch Liberation Army (BLA) confirmed that it had targeted the Zafar Express train from Quetta to Rawalpindi. The group claimed that it was now in control of the train.
A statement published in the country’s media said that the gunmen detonated a bomb on the railway line before boarding the train. The militants then quickly took control of the train and took all the passengers hostage. The BLA has warned that any attempt to rescue the hostages will lead to a “horrific situation”.
