The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, will present the UN Human Rights Fact-Finding Mission’s report on human rights violations and abuses related to the July-August protests last year in Geneva on Wednesday (March 5).
According to the UN’s official website, the event will be broadcast live from Geneva on YouTube (https://youtube.com/live/szaCueW3WLs) at 6 pm. The team will discuss with member states and civil society on the findings and recommendations for accountability, justice and human rights reforms in Bangladesh. Representatives of the Bangladeshi interim government and civil society will participate in the event.
Earlier on Monday (March 3), Volker Türk said that their recent independent fact-finding mission will support accountability, reparations, and a path to recovery and reform as it presents a true and realistic picture of Bangladesh. “Ensuring due process in criminal cases and investigating reprisal violence against minorities is crucial,” he said during a global update to the 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
Bangladesh suffered a major setback in violence last year, Turk said. The then government violated human rights by “brutally suppressing” student protests. He added that Bangladesh was now planning for a new future. Their recent independent fact-finding report on serious human rights violations would make a “significant contribution” to this.
