A journalist has been accused of beating up a police officer while recording a video of a scuffle between police officers in Badarganj, Rangpur.
The victim is Abdus Salam Biswas, Badarganj Upazila correspondent of Daily Amar Desh. He has been admitted to Badarganj Health Complex. Abdus Salam Biswas said that at around 3 pm yesterday, he was standing 100 yards away from the main gate of Badarganj Police Station. At that time, a police pickup van stopped in front of him from inside the police station. Inside the pickup van, some police officers got into a scuffle. He was recording the scene on his mobile phone. At that time, Constable Al Amin (23) forbade him from recording.
In the video captured by Salam Biswas, it can be seen that the police officer (Al Amin) got angry and kept saying, “If you don’t stop the video, I will beat you up.” At one point, he grabbed the mobile phone with his paw.
Abdus Salam alleged, “After taking away the mobile phone, three other policemen including the policeman got out of the pickup van and pushed him to the ground and punched him. Then the policemen dragged him from there and took him inside the police station. At least 10 newsmen working in the upazila rushed to the police station after receiving news of the incident. Later, the officer-in-charge (OC) of the police station AKM Atiqur Rahman expressed regret over the actions of the policemen. The accused policemen also apologized.
