Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed the police and law enforcement agencies to establish a centralised command centre to closely monitor the law and order situation nationwide. Additionally, he directed the police to implement an online system for filing First Information Reports (FIRs) across the country.
The directives were issued during a high-level meeting with top security officials held at the state guesthouse Jamuna on Monday (February 3).
The meeting was attended by Home Affairs Adviser (Retd.) Lieutenant General Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser Khoda Box Chowdhury, Home Secretary Nasimul Gani, as well as the heads of the police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Coast Guard, and special branches.
Professor Yunus emphasised the importance of leveraging modern communication technology to enhance response times and coordination among security forces. “We need to establish a command centre or headquarters that will coordinate all police and security forces,” he told senior officials.
He explained that the new command structure would streamline communication between security agencies, police stations, and law enforcement authorities nationwide, ensuring swift intervention in emergencies. This initiative aims to strengthen national security and improve public safety.
Addressing the inefficiencies in the current process of filing cases, Professor Yunus called for the introduction of an online FIR filing system. Currently, individuals must visit their nearest police station to file a complaint, a process that is both time-consuming and burdensome.
To simplify this procedure, Professor Yunus proposed establishing a dedicated hotline number—similar to emergency services like 999—that would allow complainants to file FIRs from anywhere in the country. “This will significantly reduce the inconvenience faced by citizens when filing cases,” he remarked.
He directed Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam to launch a new phone number specifically for the quick online filing of FIRs. Furthermore, the Chief Adviser tasked the IGP with setting up a special call centre to assist citizens with information and support related to the online filing process.
“Those facing difficulties while filing cases online can easily seek guidance from this call centre,” Professor Yunus added. The initiative aims to make justice more accessible and efficient, reducing bureaucratic hurdles and enhancing transparency in the legal process.
In his address, Professor Yunus underscored the necessity of adopting cutting-edge technology to bolster the capabilities of security forces. He urged maximum utilisation of modern communication tools to ensure rapid responses to emerging situations and better coordination among agencies.
